Why hospital bills look so scary

A C-section bill might say $70,000, and yet the family ends up paying around $4,000. The big number is the hospital's sticker price, which almost nobody pays. Your insurance company has already agreed to a much lower price. What you pay is your deductible plus your share, up to your plan's yearly limit.

Hospitals now have to publish the prices they've agreed on with each insurance company, but in files that are almost impossible to read. We do the digging and bring the prices together in one place, so you can see what having a baby really costs and plan for it.

Where our prices come from

Our prices start with the price data hospitals are required by law to publish. That data comes in huge technical files, often millions of lines long, made for computers rather than people. We pull out the prices for having a baby, check them carefully, and turn them into the simple numbers you see here. We add official information about each hospital's level of care for moms and babies. We never take money from hospitals to change what we show. More about our data.
